Many couples struggle to resolve problems particularly if they have become locked, over the years, in an unhealthy way of communicating with each other. By having an independent professional present whilst problems are discussed it can greatly assist in issues being resolved. For most couples, this can to begin with seem like a strange and somewhat artificial way of communicating, however, experience has shown that with assistance and help many couples can learn, to not only resolve problems that have been bothering them for some time but to go on to develop healthy and more productive relationships.
In some cases this positive outcome may not always be possible and the role of the couples counsellor may be more focused towards trying to get the couples to end in an appropriate and healthy manner. Bad endings, especially where children are concerned can be very damaging for all concerned and having the willingness and courage to engage in couples counselling can be a decision that saves many people from having problems later in life.
